Event Details

Ever wondered what really makes our history-telling clock tick? Go behind the scenes with maker Ian in an immersive workshop that reveals the craft, mechanics, and magic behind the iconic clock.

Join us at 11am on Thursday 19th Feb

The workshop will be interactive, using hands-on props that attendees can handle to better understand how different movements are actuated. These demonstrations will showcase devices such as pneumatic (air) cylinders, pneumatic rotary turning units, and electric motors, allowing participants to see and feel how each mechanism operates.

The session will explain where these devices are used throughout the clock, described from top to bottom, and how each contributes to the overall motion and function of the system. In addition, the workshop will cover how power is supplied from within the Clerk’s Office and how that power is distributed to the various components. Finally, attendees will be guided through the sequence of operations as controlled by an electronic programmer, illustrating how the movements are coordinated and timed to ensure accurate and reliable clock operation.
