Many of the documents on display here had to be traced and brought from archive but a number of them were found on the premises. One display, 'The Jeffersons all at Sea', is of particular historical interest as it shows that the Jefferson family had a supply contract with the White Star Line, the company who owned the SS Titanic. There is every chance that when the Titanic sank a bottle of our very own dark rum went down with it.
The rum barrel in this room is one of the largest in the country and when full would have held approximately £250,000 worth of rum! The barrel actually reaches up to the floor above and when first brought to the premises could not fit through the doors.
Other items reveal the business practices of the family and some of the practical issues involved in a business stretching all over the world.
From here we can now move on to the second floor where sailors, smugglers and gangsters await!
