Sugar Caning African Village Slave Ship Punch House The Jeffersons

Image of a London Punch House This scene shows a typical London Punch House and is based on a series of works by the painter William Hogarth which can be seen in the rotating display.

The gentleman on the left is obviously distracted by the young lady in front of him while the lady at the back refills his glass with one hand while stealing his watch with the other. By the time the gentleman wakes in the morning anything of value about his person would have been taken from the gold buckles on his shoes to his silk stockings.

Meanwhile the Jefferson family profited handsomely from the rum business. We now have an opportunity to learn more about them in the Jefferson Family Exhibition.
